From Golf Village to the Sawgrass Corridor

Sunrise began in the early 1960s as Sunrise Golf Village — famously marketed by developer Norman Johnson with an upside-down demonstration house that drew national attention — and the city's east side still reflects those origins: modest one-story homes, many with single-car garages, built in the 1960s and early 1970s. Doors and openers in these neighborhoods are frequently past their design life, and narrow single-car openings are less forgiving when a door starts tracking crooked.

As the city pushed west toward what became Sawgrass Mills and the arena district, the housing changed with it: 1980s and 1990s subdivisions with two-car garages, heavier doors, and HOA communities where replacement doors usually need to match a prescribed look. Door replacements — like other work that alters the home's exterior — need a city permit and a product-approved, wind-rated door; routine repairs like springs, cables, rollers, and opener service generally do not, and the city's permitting office can confirm for your job. If you're replacing an original 1960s-era door, the upgrade in storm protection is substantial.
